Investigators give two groups of mice the same broad-spectrum antibiotic. After the drug has cleared, one group receives a washed intestinal bacterial community from untreated donors; the other receives sterile buffer. Both groups are then exposed to equal numbers of toxigenic C. difficile spores. The donor-community group has much less C. difficile growth and toxin in the colon. The two groups have similar epithelial integrity immediately before exposure.
