A cultured epithelial cell initially stops proliferating when an external growth factor is removed. Investigators replace one allele of a signaling gene with a tumor-derived variant while retaining a normally expressed wild-type allele. The altered protein has greater signaling activity than the normal protein, and the cells continue proliferating after growth-factor withdrawal.
