A researcher compares two primer pairs that bind opposite strands at the same two boundaries of a purified linear DNA segment. The 3-prime ends of pair X face toward the intervening segment; the 3-prime ends of pair Y face away from it. Polymerase activity, nucleotide supply, and repeated strand separation are adequate. There are no other primer-binding sites.
