SAMPLE QUESTION

A 7-year-old boy is referred after a urine test obtained during a febrile illness detected reducing substances. Repeat testing when he is well remains positive, although a glucose-specific urine dipstick is negative. Urine carbohydrate analysis identifies fructose. His plasma glucose is 88 mg/dL, growth is normal, and he regularly eats fruit without vomiting or lethargy. Examination shows no hepatomegaly.

Deficiency of which enzyme best explains these findings?
